EUGANAEAN BATHS: HISTORY
The Euganaean Baths were known as early as classical antiquity for the efficacy of the treatments offered here, which take advantage of the therapeutic virtues of the thermal waters. The numerous small bronzes, votive pottery, and inscriptions displayed in the Museo d’Este witness to the important role played by thermal waters for the paleo-Veneto peoples, an importance which grew
significantly during Roman times. The Romans even built special vats where the patients were immersed in hot water and mud, as shown by the Roman bath complex of Montegrotto and the abundant literary testimonies offered by the leading Latin authors, from Pliny to Suetonius and Martial, from Livy to Lucretius. The fame of the baths continued to grow in the Middle Ages and in subsequent epochs all the way to our day: Petrarch, Shakespeare, Goethe, and Mozart – among others – were unable to resist the pleasure of the therapeutical properties of thermal cures, combined with the vicinity of places rich in history
and culture.
TUSCANY
This is the region of the thermal springs. Waters that relax and cure all sorts of pathologies, with springs gushing at high temperatures in every area of Tuscany and around which modern, functional and well-cared-for thermal establishments have been created. Precious waters that were already known of, exploited and appreciated in ancient times; both in the Etruscan and
Roman eras; waters in which famous celebrities from history, politics, literature and religion have immersed themselves; waters in which visitors from all over still bathe today. All the Tuscan thermal spas are equipped with avant-garde therapeutic structures and the most modern diagnostics systems, apart from which they are all set in the wonderful nature of the Tuscan countryside, near the cities of art and ancient villages so as to also offer the chance for tours and excursions. The surrounding environment aids the beneficial effects of the waters. On the other hand, these spas are not just therapeutic centres
but also a source of general psychic and physical regeneration: the beneficial effects of the warm waters restore wellbeing to the body and soul, offering health and relaxation. Mankind's right, they are also legally sanctioned.
THE THERMAL SPA OF BAGNI SAN FILIPPO
Just twenty kilometres away from Chianciano, at Bagni San Filippo, the waters gush at a temperature of fifty-two degrees and over, for curing osteo-neuro-joint diseases, ear, nose and throat afflictions, skin diseases, while also helping to combat stress and regain the figure. The thermal swimming pool located in an attractive position near the calcareous concretions of Fosso Bianco is also equipped with a solarium and waterfalls providing a natural, regenerating hydromassage. This is where the ancient Romans bathed, where Lorenzo il Magnifico came during the Renaissance, and
the holy Florentine hermit Filippo Benzi retired to meditate.
THE THERMAL SPA OF MONTEPULCIANO
Even closer to Chianciano, Montepulciano is famous for its very modern vascular and orthopaedic rehabilitation centre, and centre for diagnosing and curing asthma, bronchitis and pulmonary emphysema. The thermal waters of Montepulciano are captured at a hundred and twenty metres underground and convoyed to the therapy sections without any air contact, avoiding alterations of the natural therapeutic qualities of the sulphur.
THE THERMAL SPA OF BAGNO VIGNONI
The waters of the large pool of the medieval village of Bagno Vignoni are said to often have been visited by Santa Caterina da Siena. Since 1978 the large pool has been closed to bathing for hygienic and medical reasons, however it still has a rare and suggestive atmosphere. The thermal spa of antique origin, made famous in literature and films, today with its establishment not far from the famous pool, is seductive, soothing and relaxing, just like the village surrounding it.
Chianciano is one of the most important Italian spa centres. Its spas are famous from Etruscan time. Its tourist offer is very interesting. In the prestigious Hotels of all cathegories you can spend pleasant stays of relaxation with perfect service and board. The consortium of Hotels C.A.T. Chianciano Pool owns one third of the 15.000 beds of the town which together with services of coaches, guides, restaurants, museums, and through all the structures for leisure time, give to Chianciano the opportunity to overnight all kinds of tourism: individuals, groups,
incentives and congresses, thank to the experience of Destriero Viaggi agency, the Tour Operator of C.A.T. Chianciano Pool. For the reservation of the various stays you can combine wellbeing, utilising those healthy waters, which made this spa town famous, with enjoying the wonderful landscape of nature of Val d'Orcia and Amiata. Situated in Tuscany, on the border with Umbria, in a region where the three provinces SIENA, AREZZO and PERUGIA adjoin and pleasantly placed between ROME and FLORENCE, Chianciano is an Etruscan town and offers an inexhaustible richness of art, history, culture, religion and archaeology.
It is the ideal place for full-day excursions and pilgrimages; you can comfortably visit the most famous localities of the centre of Italy together with the most interesting religious sites and abbeys. SAN GIMIGNANO, PISA, ORVIETO, TODI, ASSISI, SAN GALGANO Abbey, SANT'ANTIMO Abbey and MONTE OLIVETO MAGGIORE Abbey are only few examples of what you can easily reach sleeping in Chianciano. Also the small towns of the surroundings are very remarkable: Pienza, Montepulciano, Montalcino, Chiusi, Cetona, Bagno Vignoni, San Casciano dei Bagni, which besides the above said richness, offer real treasures of the local
oenology and gastronomy.
EUGANAEAN BATHS
Set in a broad plain capable of restoring wellbeing and calm to its guests, immersed in a region brimming with places filled with art and culture, the Euganaean thermal basin is to the northeast of the Euganaean Hills, one of the most beautiful and richest areas of the Veneto. This is an area unique in the world, where visitors can recover their physical and mental equilibrium thanks to the therapeutic virtues of the water gushing forth here, enjoying the benefits of the cures offered right in their hotel, in Abano, Montegrotto, Galzignano, Teolo and Battaglia, the four centers
that make up the so-called Euganeaen Baths, with their more than 150 hotels and over 200 indoor and outdoor pools. Handy elevators make it easy to go from the rooms down to the floors given over to the pools and the spa center for therapeutic and aesthetic treatments.
THERMAL BATHS OF LIGNANO
The thermal baths of Lignano, or Terme di Lignano, are located on one of the most enchanting and popular beaches in the northern Adriatic area, Lignano Sabbiadoro. Situated in the most elegant part of this seaside resort area called the Riviera, immersed in a spectacular, age-old pine grove surrounded by the sea, the renovated, modern, elegant thermal baths of Lignano offer, apart from the traditional services one finds at thermal springs, innovative programs for prevention and aesthetics, in line with new discoveries of medical science, and propose a holiday of wellbeing
characterised by health-beauty-fitness. How to get there To reach Lignano Sabbiadoro, take the Venezia-Trieste motorway, and exit at Latisana. Proceed for about 25 kilometres to the baths. You can also reach Latisana by train, on the railway line that links Venice to Trieste; you then must continue by coach. There is regular coach service from Pordenone, Udine, Trieste, Milan and Genoa. Those who prefer air travel should be reminded that the closest airport to Lignano Sabbiadoro is at Ronchi dei Legionari, 58 kilometres away, in the municipality of Gorizia.
THE THERMAL SPA OF RAPOLANO
The springs of the Antica Querciolaia and San Giovanni, at Rapolano are also ancient and famous, popular since the fourth and third centuries before Christ and greatly appreciated by the Republic of Siena during the fourteenth century. The sulphuric-bicarbonate-calcium waters of the San Giovanni Thermal Spa delivers 1100 litres a minute at a constant temperature of 39 degrees, and the establishment offers numerous other valuable services making up and complementing the beneficial properties of the water. Worth noting, the programs aimed at recuperating a better physical form in
seven days: anti-cellulite cures, weight loss, post-partum, and anti-stress cures. The programs based on the sulphuric waters are associated with a hypocaloric diet and physical activity in the pool, gym and woods. These waters managed to cure Garibaldi's injuries sustained at Aspromonte.
SAINT VINCENT: THE THERMAL SPA
A stay at the Saint Vincent thermal spa helps you to feel fit and well, while treating yourself to magical moments immersed in the nature of the Valle d’Aosta. Entertainment-filled evenings, and special concessions in many restaurants and shops in the town will top off your stay.
THE THERMAL SPA OF SAN CASCIANO DEI BAGNI
At the foot of Monte Cetona, amidst oak and chestnut forests, there are forty-two springs rich in mineral salts, sulphate, calcium, magnesium and fluoride. We are at San Casciano Bagni, a resort recommended by many rheumatological doctors and orthopaedics for its mud-therapy and fango-balneotherapy cures for arthrosis and its complications, arthritis and traumatology.
THE THERMAL SPRINGS OF SATURNIA
Halfway between Rome and Florence, in the heart of an ancient land in the province of Grosseto, we find the thermal spa of Saturnia where tradition and culture integrate and meld together, with genuine cooking, numerous artistic and archaeological testimonies, and magnificent landscapes. The thermal centre is in the countryside with swimming pools all around, the ideal spot for relaxing while the sulphurous waters carry out their beneficial work on all the respiratory, genital and digestive pathologies.
